Uterine (Fallopian) Tubes

Abstract

Apart from various locations that accompany malposition of the uterus and ovary, variations of the uterine tube usually depend on developmental faults traceable to imperfect or aberrant formation of the müllerian ducts. Retention of the fetal tortuosity, stunted development, or complete absence may involve one or both tubes. Complete doubling of the uterine tubes may occur in association with supernumerary ovaries.

Retention of the fetal tortuosity, stunted development, or complete absence may involve one or both tubes. Complete doubling of the uterine tubes may occur in association with supernumerary ovaries. Occasionally, partial duplication of the tube is observed, consisting of a short canal ending in a diminutive fimbriated extremity in the vicinity of the infundibulum Such accessory tubes are probably due to a repetition of the invagination that normally produces the infundibulum.

The uterine tubes may be uncanalized.

Quite often, the tube has from one to three fringed accessory openings that may lie close to the fimbriated end or at some distance along the tube. Accessory fringed openings were found in 5/38 and 6/164 subjects.

Congenital absence of the uterine tubes is rare.

A uterine tube has been found in a femoral hernia.

Tubal variations are not necessarily associated with ovarian anomalies.
